"The war of the United States with Spain was very brief. Its results were many, startling, and of world-wide meaning."
-Henry Cabot Lodge
"It has been a splendid little war."
-John Hay
1.Remember the Maine is actually about -a battle ship - which exploded and sank in the water near Cuba and led the U.S. to blame spain and declare war in 1898.we don't know exactly what caused the USS Maine to explode- might have been a Spainish torpedo......
2.After "remember the Maine" in 1898
3Because this war it was short(4 months long). an easy victory for America .and the U.S. gained a lot form it.
The Spanish-American War was fought mostly in Cuba and the Philippines become Spain used to control those two places and the U.S. wanted control of them. The U.S. wanted control of the Philippines because it would help American businesses sell more goods to Asians and be a good location near China to buy and sell things with the Chinese.
American Imperialism
what is imperialism?
Imperialism mean The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations.
U.S. Imperialism
The U.S. was involved in imperailsm in :
The Philippines-become a U.S. territory for about 56 years after the S-A War
Guam-still under US control -important Navy & Air Force base
Wake Island-not under US control-mostly a wildlife refuge today
Midway Island-"
Johnston Island-uninhabited and out of use
American Somoa-still under US control,but self-governed
Hawaii-become the 50th U.S. state
Cuba- a lot of U.S. influence until the Communists (led by Fidel Castro) took over
Puerto Rico-contrnues to the U.S. territory-might become the 51st state someday???
Venezuela
Guatemala
Honduras
Nicaragua
Panama-The Panama Canal
Chile
The U.S. did most of its imperialist activity in the Pacific Island and in Central America.
MYopinion of Imperialism
In today's world countries should not be trying to takes over other countries.Every country is entitled to be ruled by its own people. Influence is a different story though. If the U.S. or another damorcracy can influence a country to become more democratic ,then they should. There are countries that have oppressive government that do not allow their people many rights. The U.S. should help those people have better government and more freedoms. This would also help the U.S to have more allies and more place to trade with.Getting involved in other countries' business is risky though. because this can lead to war and be very clostly9see Iraq and Afghanistan).

Yellow Journalism:
Yellow Journalism was the name for a style of newspaper writing that was exaggerated and sensationalized.Newspaper publisher were trying to get more readers and sales,so they took the news and made it more exciting and more powerful, something streching the truth or jumping to conclusions.
It affected the Spanish-American War because it led Americans to develop War fever-people wanting war.Americans read the stories of what the Spanish were doing to the Cubans and they read about what might have happened to the USS Maine and they wanted war with Spain.
